ZOLEO was better for our family because my wife could keep one conversation going whether I had cell service at a trailhead, Wi-Fi at a lodge, or satellite coverage farther out. No one had to figure out which address or app to use.
But the phone dependency is real. I carry a small battery pack and keep the phone in airplane mode most of the time. If I were doing technical alpine stuff where a damaged phone is plausible, I would not make it my only communication setup.
