These two lights share a brand and a pocket clip, and almost nothing else.
The X4 is a short, chunky work light built around a full-size 18650 cell. The X5 is a long, flat pocket tool that adds a UV emitter and a green laser to a white LED.
So the useful question is not which one is brighter on paper. It is which set of jobs you actually carry a light for.
- Pick the X4 if you want the most usable light per pocket: bigger battery, stronger beam, magnet, side light.
- Pick the X5 if UV inspection or a laser pointer is part of your day, or you want a flat light that disappears in a pocket.
- Independent testers measured both below the box figures, the X5 by a much wider margin on throw.
Wuben X4 vs X5: the decision in one paragraph
The Wuben X4 vs X5 choice comes down to battery and purpose. The X4 runs on a removable 18650 cell that stores about 2.7 times the energy of the X5's flat 1200 mAh pack. That buys more sustained output and longer runs. The X5 trades that capacity for a thinner body and two extra tools, a 365 nm UV emitter and a green laser. If you would never use either, the X4 is the better flashlight. But if you inspect, present or hunt for stains, then the X5 does things no plain light can.
Our Wuben X-series roundup covers the wider family. This page goes deeper on just these two, using Wuben's published specs and two independent bench tests.
One light for most people, one for specialists
Box specs vs measured: where the numbers hold up
Both lights miss some of their headline figures, which is normal for the category. However, they miss by very different amounts, and that changes the Wuben X4 vs X5 comparison.
X4. Wuben lists 1,500 lumens, 10,506 candela and 205 meters of throw on its official X4 page. In the 1Lumen review, the light measured 1,460 lumens at turn-on and 1,053 lumens at 30 seconds. It then settled near 465 lumens and held there. Peak intensity measured 9,725 candela at turn-on, about 197 meters, and 7,950 candela at 30 seconds. So the X4 lands close to its box.
X5. Wuben's own X4 vs X5 comparison gives the X5 1,300 lumens and 200 meters. The Amazon listing, by contrast, says 118 meters. A BudgetLightForum bench review measured roughly 4,000 candela, which works out to about 126 meters. That supports the lower figure. The same tester saw Turbo drop to about 400 lumens within the first minute and hold there for roughly 100 minutes.
In practice, the X4 throws noticeably farther. That gap matters when you need to light the far side of a field. For a refresher on why candela, not lumens, decides reach, see what beam throw actually means.

Battery and charging: the real difference
Battery is where these two lights split hardest. The X4 ships with an 18650-AB3400 cell, a standard size you can swap for any good flat or button-top 18650. 1Lumen ran a Samsung 30Q in it without trouble. So a spare cell in a bag doubles your runtime, and the light outlives its first battery.
The X5 uses a proprietary flat pack rated at 1200 mAh and 4.44 Wh. The BLF tester removed it with a release button and also ran the light on four AAA cells as a backup, at reduced output. That AAA fallback is genuinely useful in a car kit. However, the pack itself is a Wuben part, so you depend on Wuben for replacements.
Both Amazon listings describe their batteries as non-removable, which conflicts with Wuben's spec pages and both reviews. That wording appears to be shipping-compliance language rather than a description of the hardware.
Charging times also differ. On 1Lumen's bench, the X4's larger cell took about 3 hours 7 minutes to fill. The X5 refilled in about 1 hour 20 minutes on the BLF bench, because there is far less to fill. Neither number is a flaw; it is simply what the capacity costs. And if your runtimes ever seem short against the box, this explainer on flashlight runtime claims covers why.

Wuben X4: more light per pocket
Removable 18650, magnet, side light, tail switch
The X4 earns the overall pick because it does the core job best. Its 3400 mAh 18650 holds far more energy than the X5’s pack. In testing it also held a steady output near 465 lumens after the initial step-down.
The extras are practical rather than flashy. The magnetic tail sticks to a car hood or a breaker panel. The 4000K side light dims from 100 lumens down to 1, which suits reading and close work. The tactical tail switch fires the main beam even when the slide is set to the side light.
The trade-off is shape. At 26 mm thick it is a lump in a jeans pocket, and the four-control layout takes a few days to learn.
- Standard 18650 you can replace or carry a spare of
- Measured output close to the box figures
- Magnetic tail and stand-up base for hands-free work
- Dimmable warm side light plus RGB signal colors
- 5-year warranty for registered users
- Thick, short body prints in slim pockets
- Four separate controls have a learning curve
- Low color rendering on the main beam (about CRI 65 measured)
Wuben X5: three tools, one flat body
White LED, 365 nm UV and a green laser
The X5 is a different kind of tool. A rotary dial selects white, UV or lock, and a separate button fires the green laser on its own. White or UV can run at the same time as the laser, which is handy for pointing at what you are lighting.
The 365 nm UV emitter is the real value. It shows pet stains, makes many scorpions glow, and checks UV security marks. Furthermore, the 21 mm flat body carries like a slim pen case rather than a tube.
The cost is the battery. A 1200 mAh pack cannot match an 18650, and the BLF tester measured far less throw than Wuben claims. It also costs more than the X4.
- 365 nm UV and green laser in addition to white light
- Flat 21 mm body carries well in a front pocket
- Battery pack can be swapped, with a four-AAA fallback
- Fast recharge because the pack is small
- About 4.44 Wh of battery, far less than the X4
- Measured throw well short of the 200 m claim
- Proprietary pack means relying on Wuben for spares
- Laser class varies by market; treat it with care
Controls and carry
The X4 puts a slide switch on its side with four positions: lock, side light, main light and moonlight. A rotary knob sets brightness or picks the RGB color. In addition, an e-switch handles on, off and Turbo, and the tail switch gives momentary Turbo. That is a lot of controls for a small light. But once learned, it means the right output is always one movement away. 1Lumen also found no PWM flicker at any level.
The X5 is simpler. A top dial chooses UV, lock or white. The tail switch turns the white light on and steps through Eco, Low, Medium, High and Turbo, with memory. A double-click gives strobe. The laser has its own softer button. There is no shortcut straight to Turbo, which some tactical users will miss.
For carry, the X4 is short and thick, at 96 mm long and 26 mm deep. The X5 is long and thin, at 137 mm long and 21 mm deep. So the X5 suits a shirt or front pants pocket, while the X4 rides better in a jacket, bag or on a belt clip. If you are still deciding between switch styles in general, tail switch vs side switch walks through the trade-offs.
- Decide whether you need UV or a laser
This is the whole case for the X5. If neither tool would leave your pocket in a normal month, the X4 is better value.
Look forA real, recurring task: stain checks, inspection, teaching or pointing.AvoidBuying the X5 for features you will try once. - Weigh reach and runtime
The X4’s larger cell and stronger measured intensity give it more reach and longer high-output runs.
Look forThe X4 if you walk dark trails, check a yard or work outdoors.AvoidJudging either light by its 30-second Turbo figure. - Think about where it rides
Thickness matters more than weight in a pocket. The two weigh about the same, but the X5 is 5 mm thinner.
Look forThe X5 for slim pockets, the X4 for bags, belts and jackets.AvoidIgnoring length: the X5 is about 4 cm longer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the battery in the Wuben X4 or X5 removable?
Yes for both, despite the Amazon listings. The X4 takes a standard 18650 cell, and 1Lumen ran a Samsung 30Q in it. The X5 uses a flat Wuben ABN1200 pack that releases with a button, and it can also run on four AAA cells at lower output.
Which is brighter, the Wuben X4 or X5?
The X4. It is rated higher, and in independent tests it measured more than twice the peak intensity of the X5. Both step down from Turbo quickly, as most compact lights do.
Is the X5's green light a laser?
Yes. Wuben describes it as a green laser in the 508 to 525 nm range, and the BLF reviewer’s unit was Class 3R. Never aim it at people, animals, vehicles or aircraft.
Can either light charge while in use?
The X4 can run its moonlight mode while charging. The BLF tester reported the X5 runs while charging on every level except High and Turbo.
Which one is better for everyday carry?
For most people, the X4, because it is the better light. The X5 wins for flat-pocket carry and for anyone who uses UV or a pointer regularly.
Buy the X4 if you want the better flashlight. It has more battery, more measured reach, a magnet, and a standard cell you can replace. Choose the X5 only if UV or a laser is part of your routine, or a flat profile matters more than runtime.
How we compared them
We did not bench-test these lights ourselves. Instead, this comparison combines Wuben's published specifications with two independent measurement sets. One is 1Lumen's X4 review, and the other is a BudgetLightForum bench review of the X5. Where the sources disagree, we say so and favor the measured figure. Measured numbers vary between samples and test rigs, so treat them as close guides rather than exact values.
Lumens alone will not tell you which light suits your day. If you are unsure how much output you need, start with how many lumens you need for everyday carry.
Battery first, extras second
- X4: about 2.7x the battery energy, more measured reach, magnetic tail.
- X5: UV and green laser in a 21 mm flat body, with AAA backup.
- Both miss some box figures; the X5's throw claim is the furthest off.
The Wuben X4 vs X5 question is really a question about what you carry a light for. The X4 is the stronger, longer-running, more practical flashlight. The X5 is a flat multi-tool whose UV and laser justify it only if you will use them.
