A money clip only works if it holds what you carry without stretching, slipping or chewing up your pocket.
Most money clips fail in one of three ways. The spring loses its grip, the clip rides up and drops cash, or the edge wears a hole in the pocket lining.

What makes the best money clips different
The best money clips solve a tension problem first and a style problem second. A clip has to grip two bills as firmly as twenty, and it has to do that for years without taking a set.
That is why material matters more than looks. Spring steel grips hard when new but can bend open if you overload it. Titanium flexes further before it deforms. Carbon fiber springs back without taking a set, and magnets do not depend on spring tension at all.

Five clips for five ways of carrying
Clip materials compared
Spring steel is the classic. It grips hard out of the box, but it has a limit. Stuff a thick stack in once and the arms can bend past their elastic range, after which they never close fully again. Plated steel can also wear through at the bend and start to rust.
Titanium flexes further before it takes a set and does not rust. It is also non-magnetic, which matters if you carry magstripe cards. The trade-off is usually capacity, because a titanium clip has to be thin to flex at all.
Carbon fiber behaves like a very good spring. It returns to shape after being opened wide, so it suits people whose cash load changes from day to day.
Magnetic clips have no spring at all. Two magnets pinch the fold of the bills. Grip depends on the magnet, not on how the clip has been treated, but a thick stack weakens the hold because it pushes the magnets apart.
Card holder hybrids pair a rigid card case with a clip on the outside. They carry the most, and they keep cards from bending, but they are the heaviest option here.
Front-pocket carry, pocket wear and tension

Front-pocket carry has its own cost, though. A metal clip rubs the same spot of pocket lining every time you reach in. Over months, a sharp-edged clip can wear through thin chino pockets. Clips with rounded or leather-covered edges are kinder to fabric.

A straight answer on RFID blocking
Several clips here advertise RFID blocking. It does no harm, but it is not a reason to choose one clip over another.
Modern contactless cards use one-time cryptographic codes for each transaction. Remote skimming of those cards is largely theoretical, and real contactless fraud almost always follows physical theft of the card. BGR's review of the RFID-blocking question reaches the same conclusion.
So treat RFID blocking as a bonus that comes free with an aluminum body. Do not pay extra for it in a leather clip.

The Ridge solves the problem bare clips cannot: carrying a full card load without bending the cards or stretching the clip. Two 6061-T6 aluminum plates and an elastic band hold one to twelve cards, and the money clip bolts to the outside for folded bills.
Because cards and cash are separated, a thick stack of cash never loosens the grip on your cards. The aluminum body also blocks RFID as a side effect. Ridge replaces the elastic, screws and clip under its lifetime guarantee, which matters because the elastic is the part that eventually wears.
Watch for: it is one of the heavier picks here, and getting the last card out of a full stack takes a push through the notch. Order the money clip version, not the cash strap version, if you want a clip.
Vargo titanium: for people who carry almost nothing

Vargo is a backpacking gear maker, and this clip shows it. It weighs seven grams and measures about two inches long, according to Vargo’s own spec sheet. Titanium does not rust and will not affect magstripe cards.
It is a clip in the purest sense. Expect it to hold a few folded bills and a card or two, not a full wallet’s worth. Owners who try to load it like a card holder end up disappointed.
Best for: hikers, runners and anyone who mostly pays by phone and wants a backup bill and ID.
Fossil Ingram: a clip that looks like a wallet
Leather card case, magnetic clip
The Ingram is a slim leather card case with three card slots, a slide pocket and a magnetic money clip on the back. It measures 3.8 by 2.75 inches and about a quarter inch thick, so it sits flat in a jacket’s inside pocket.
The magnetic clip has no spring to fatigue. Fold the bills, lay them on the back and the magnet holds them. Leather edges also mean nothing sharp rubs your pocket lining.
Watch for: magnets and magstripes do not mix well. Chip and contactless cards are unaffected, but keep hotel key cards in a different slot.
Travelambo carbon fiber: a spring that does not give up

This is the budget pick, and its material is the reason to choose it over a bent-steel clip. Carbon fiber returns to its original shape after you empty it, so a heavy day does not leave it loose for the next one.
Travelambo says it holds up to 15 cards or a large stack of bills. In practice, a front-pocket load of a few cards with folded cash on top is where it is most comfortable.
Watch for: carbon fiber is slick, so a single card can slide out of a nearly empty clip. Carry at least two.

Leather over two magnets
A strip of leather folded over two magnets. You lay the bills inside the fold and the magnets close it. The maker rates it for ten to fifteen bills, which matches how a magnetic clip behaves: past that, the stack holds the magnets too far apart.
It is soft, quiet and easy on pockets. Business cards can sit on the outside, but it is not a card holder.
Best for: cash-first carriers who keep cards in a phone case or a separate sleeve.

Do magnetic money clips damage credit cards?
Not chip or contactless cards, which do not store data magnetically. Magstripes can be weakened by strong magnets, and hotel key cards are the most sensitive. Keep those away from the magnet side.
Why does my money clip keep getting looser?
The spring has been bent past its elastic range, usually by an oversized stack. Once that happens it will not fully recover. Titanium, carbon fiber and magnetic clips resist this better than plain spring steel.
Is a money clip better than a slim wallet?
For cash-heavy carry with few cards, yes. For six or more cards, a slim wallet or a card holder hybrid like the Ridge is usually more comfortable.
Which way should a money clip face in my pocket?
