A pen that works at a desk can become the weak link the moment the conditions turn hostile.
Rain has soaked the notebook cover, fingers are numb inside gloves, and the only writing surface is balanced on a knee. In that moment, “reliable” is not a brand verdict; it is the absence of the specific failure that stops the note from being made.
A pressurized Fisher cartridge is built to keep ink moving through cold, inverted use, and low-pressure environments, while Rite in the Rain’s Clicker pairs a practical click mechanism with ink intended to perform on damp, weatherproof paper. But paper matters as much as the pen: water-resistant sheets prevent the page from turning to pulp, whereas ordinary wet paper may still feather or resist a line. Pocket carry adds another test. The Bullet minimizes bulk, the Cap-O-Matic offers a capped, sturdy format, and the Clicker favors one-handed deployment. Gloves, rain, page stock, and carry space—not a logo—determine the more dependable choice.
- A pressurized refill can write upside down because internal gas pressure pushes ink toward the ball.
Three field-ready approaches
What “all-weather” writing really covers
- Pressure and angleA pressurized Fisher refill can continue feeding ink upside down and through temperature swings; Rite in the Rain’s cartridge is designed for wet-weather field notes, but neither makes poor handwriting easier to read.Works well whenReliable line delivery at awkward angles and in cold or heat.Watch forAssuming a pen that writes upside down will solve every wet-paper problem.
- Paper surface and moistureWaterproof paper sheds water rather than absorbing it, so the pen and notebook need to be matched. On merely damp paper, both can produce usable marks; on glossy or heavily textured stock, skipping and light strokes become more likely.Works well whenA deliberate pairing of all-weather ink and waterproof paper.Watch forTreating ordinary soaked notebook paper as equivalent to coated field paper.
- Drying and legibilityInk that resists washing away may still smear briefly if rubbed before it sets. Standing water can dilute contrast, pool over letters, and make impressions hard to inspect even when the ink remains on the page.Works well whenNotes that remain readable after water is wiped away.Watch forWriting directly beneath pooled water and expecting crisp results.
- Deployment and supportClick mechanisms are quicker with gloves; the Bullet is more pocketable but must be uncapped. Fisher’s broad refill ecosystem favors long-term replacement flexibility, while Rite in the Rain refills suit a purpose-built notebook kit.Works well whenA format that can be opened, used, and refilled in the intended carry setup.Watch forChoosing compactness or speed without considering the refill supply.
For a closer comparison of which pen still writes when paper is wet, separate ink delivery from page readability. A pen can lay down a line in rain, while water trapped on the sheet still obscures the words.
A practical field sequence is simple: open the pen without fumbling, write with enough pressure for the paper texture, then shield or wipe the page before checking the note. The Cap-O-Matic and Clicker favor rapid deployment; the Bullet trades that speed for exceptionally compact carry.
A full-size pressurized pen for awkward writing positions
Best for dependable writing in extreme conditions
The America 250 Cap-O-Matic is a commemorative version of Fisher’s familiar full-size, click-activated Space Pen. Its practical appeal is not the anniversary finish but the pressurized Fisher refill platform inside a body that offers more length and leverage than compact bullet-style pens. That makes it a convincing fit for repeated notes, forms, and log entries when a small pocket pen feels cramped.
The sealed, pressurized cartridge is designed to keep feeding ink when the tip is elevated, the pen is used sideways, or cold conditions make ordinary ballpoint ink reluctant to move. Its writing character remains distinctly Space Pen: a firmer, more deliberate ballpoint contact than the especially slick, low-drag feel associated with many conventional gel or hybrid-ink pens.
- Pressurized refill supports inverted and non-horizontal writing
- Full-size barrel improves control during longer entries
- Push-button deployment works readily one-handed
- Rated operating range suits severe hot and cold exposure
- Refill has more drag than many smooth conventional pens
- Medium ballpoint line can feel less expressive on ordinary paper
- Commemorative finish may not suit purely utilitarian carry
In brief This is the stronger Fisher option when dependable ink delivery and full-size handling outweigh the desire for an effortlessly smooth stroke.
For frequent field writing, the Cap-O-Matic combines a genuinely useful full-size shape with the Space Pen system’s key advantage: ink delivery that is less dependent on gravity and moderate temperature. It is the more capable choice when notes may be taken upright, sideways, or in the cold.
The trade-off is tactile rather than functional. The pressurized cartridge typically feels firmer and less fluid than a smooth conventional refill, so it favors certainty over a luxurious writing glide.
A practical click pen for weatherproof notebooks
Top choice for rugged everyday weatherproof writing
The All-Weather Clicker is built around the same field routine that makes Rite in the Rain notebooks useful: pull it from a pocket, click once, and record the detail before rain, gloves, or a hurried stance turns it into a missed note. Its ABS barrel, oversized button, and triangular textured grip prioritize dependable handling over a polished, premium feel.
The 0.8 mm pressurized black cartridge is a sensible match for coated weatherproof pages, where ordinary ballpoint ink can bead, skip, or take an unhelpfully long time to set. On ordinary paper it remains a broad, assertive ballpoint line; it is serviceable for forms and notes, though less refined than a finer everyday pen.
- Large clicker works well with gloves
- Textured triangular grip stays controllable when wet
- Pressurized 0.8 mm ink handles damp, coated pages
- Tough plastic body suits replaceable field carry
- Broad line can look heavy on ordinary paper
- Plastic construction lacks premium pen feel
- Not the strongest choice for sustained upside-down writing
For a Rite in the Rain notebook system, this is an unusually coherent pairing: the grip and large clicker address the moments when rain or gloves make a conventional pen irritating to use. Its main advantage is practical availability, not elite writing refinement. The Clicker is a strong value where pens are likely to be lost, loaned, or worked hard; a Fisher Space Pen remains the more convincing option when extreme-angle performance is central.
Fisher Bullet for low-bulk backup writing
- Short, sealed profile fits small carry spaces
- Posted cap creates a usable full-length writing body
- Pressurized refill supports inverted and wet-condition notes
- Pocket clip keeps the closed pen accessible
- Cap must be removed and posted before writing
- Smooth, narrow barrel offers limited long-session comfort
- Small format is easier to misplace than a full-size pen
Closed, the Fisher Bullet takes up markedly less room than a conventional click pen, making it an especially sensible reserve pen for a pocket organizer, glove box, or emergency kit. Posting the cap turns that small package into a longer writing instrument, while the pressurized refill retains the angled-writing resilience associated with Fisher pens.
That two-step deployment is the point of the compromise. For occasional notes, the Bullet’s compactness is highly persuasive; for repeated entries in a Rite in the Rain notebook, a longer click pen is generally more comfortable in the hand and ready the moment it is picked up.
Fisher Space Pen vs. Rite in the Rain: Common Questions
Can a Fisher Space Pen really write upside down?
Yes. Its pressurized refill is designed to keep feeding ink when the tip is elevated, the pen is used sideways, or cold conditions make ordinary ballpoint ink reluctant to move, because internal gas pressure pushes ink toward the ball.
Does waterproof ink alone guarantee a legible note in the rain?
No. Ink delivery and page readability are separate problems. A pen can lay down a line in rain, while water trapped on the sheet can still obscure the words, so pairing all-weather ink with genuinely waterproof paper matters as much as the pen itself.
Why would someone choose the Rite in the Rain Clicker over a Fisher Space Pen?
The Clicker’s oversized button and textured triangular grip favor fast, one-handed deployment with gloves or wet hands, and its pressurized 0.8mm cartridge is matched to coated weatherproof notebook pages. It’s a more economical, replaceable option than a Fisher Space Pen, though less suited to sustained upside-down writing.
Is the Fisher Bullet a good primary writing pen?
Not really. Its short, sealed profile is built for low-bulk backup carry in an emergency kit, glove box, or pocket organizer rather than sustained writing. The cap must be removed and posted before use, and its narrow barrel offers limited comfort for long sessions.
Choose the failure mode first
Start with the problem least tolerated. For sustained reports, logs, or form work, the America 250 Cap-O-Matic’s full-size barrel is the more credible choice. For frequent waterproof-notebook entries with replaceable-tool economics, the Rite in the Rain Clicker is a sensible match. When pocket space is the constraint, the Matte Black Bullet earns its place.
Before committing, test the chosen pen on the actual forms and paper, including cold-weather pen performance where relevant. Cold hands, coated stock, and cramped writing angles expose compromises that a desk test hides.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a portable fan battery last?
Most small portable fans run for 2–4 hours on medium speed, though runtime depends on fan size, motor power, and battery capacity. USB-powered fans with external power banks can extend use indefinitely when recharged.
Are portable fans loud?
Desk fans typically operate at 45–60 decibels, similar to background conversation. Smaller pocket-size fans can be quieter at lower speeds, though high-speed settings on any small fan become noticeable in quiet rooms.
Can I use a portable fan while traveling?
Portable fans are TSA-compliant and travel-friendly if battery-powered or USB-powered. They pack easily in carry-on luggage and work well in hotel rooms, offices, or outdoors where stationary fans aren’t available.

Which one did you end up choosing as the overall daily-carry favorite? I need something for occasional rain, but 95% of my writing is grocery lists and notes at work. The Bullet looks coolest, admittedly.
For ordinary daily writing with occasional bad weather, I’d lean Cap-O-Matic if you prefer a full-size pen, or the Bullet if compact carry is the priority. The Rite Clicker makes more sense when you specifically use weatherproof notebooks or need the larger, glove-friendly click mechanism.
For winter trail notes, glove operation is the deciding factor for me, not upside-down writing. I can usually find a flat surface; I cannot always feel a tiny pen button through insulated gloves.
The Rite Clicker sounds like the practical winner there, even if the Fisher has the more famous “space pen” reputation.
The firmer Fisher stroke is why I keep going back and forth. It works when my cheap gel pens quit in the cold, but it also feels less pleasant for long meeting notes. Reliability versus comfort, as usual.
I bought the Matte Black Bullet because it disappears in a jeans pocket. It does that job perfectly, but posted it is still a little skinny for journaling more than a page or two.
Not a complaint really—just don’t let the cool compact design convince you it is a full-size writing tool. Learned that one the expensive-ish way 😅
I tested a Bullet and an All-Weather Clicker during a wet camping weekend. The Bullet wrote fine on normal paper once I got under cover, while the Clicker was clearly better on the coated Rite notebook pages.
So I don’t think there’s one winner. Bullet for “oh no, I need a pen,” Clicker for actual field notes, and Cap-O-Matic if you’re writing a bunch and have room for it.
