I kept assuming the spring was worn out, but the clip itself was actually climbing out of my front pocket when I sat down. Switching from my shallow jeans pocket to a deeper chino pocket fixed it immediately. The five-minute walking/sitting test is such an obvious idea that I somehow never tried it.
For me the clip never fell out during normal walking; it only disappeared after driving. The seat belt and the way I twisted to get out of the car were gradually pushing it upward from a high front-pocket position.
I moved it lower in the pocket and tested getting in/out of the car a few times. No losses for two weeks now. Motion matters more than a quick shake test at the kitchen counter.
